Adventures of day 2

I would like to start this blog by saying that after today the postings will probably spread out to every few days because we will be getting into teaching. Today we woke up early and headed for Kakum National Park which is located about 3.5 hours west along the coast of Ghana. When we got there we went on a canopy walk over the jungle. We saw some very cool plant life and some monkeys, butterflies etc. After the canopy walk we headed for Elmina and the oldest, largest slave castle in Sub-Saharan Africa. We toured the slave castle while a guide explained the history and details of the castle. In between the two trips we stopped at a "resort" called Coconut Grove where we had a really good lunch. So far I have not had anything too exotic to eat but all of the food has been very good and somewhat different from our normal in the United States. The largest portion of our day was spent in the car travelling. On our way home the traffic around Accra, the capital city, was terrible. It took approximately 5 hours to get home. We played some euchre and slept to pass the time. One really cool thing about the travelling is many of the cars have sayings on the back windshield like "God is good all the time" or "In God we trust" or "When the Lord say yes who can say no" and many others. Today we really got to see the poverty, scenery and culture that is Africa. I will try to explain this more later. Finally here is a brief outlook for the coming days for me and the group. Tomorrow should be low key with some sleep, watching soccer, going for a run. We will also be 5 hours ahead starting tomorrow so if it is 5pm in Michigan it is 10pm in Ghana. On Monday we will be touring the school and meeting with teachers and on Tuesday we will start in the classroom.

I have arrived!

I made it to Tema, Ghana on Thursday night at about 9pm. We flew from Detroit metro on Wednesday October 28 at 10:30 pm and landed in Amsterdam on Thursday at 7:30 am. Then we flew to Accra and landed at 7:30pm on Thursday. It was slightly longer than I thought it was supposed to be. We had about a 20 minute car ride to Tema where we are staying at the SOS Childrens Village. It was sooo nice to shower after almost two days in a plane and we were able to get a tour this morning (Friday). We have a trip and some more touring planned this weekend and will be going to the classroom on Monday or Tuesday of next week. Yes it is WARM here, but breezy thank the Lord! That is all for now but stay tuned I will try to keep you updated but not overburdened with pages of information. God bless!

1 week before leaving for Ghana

This is the test run for my Ghana adventures blog. In the next several weeks I hope to keep you all up to date on my student teaching experience in Ghana. If you have questions or want to get in touch with me from October 28 - December 11 you can email or email! I am getting excited to pack and soon head over seas. This will be my first trip outside of the United States, hopefully it is a good one. I will probably be including some information on here about the teaching experience, the culture, witnessing/christianity and travelling/fun experiences. Feel free to let anyone know about this that you want. I am sure I will forget to get this information to many people before I leave. Well that is it for today I will probably post one more time before leaving for Ghana....see you then.
