Adventures of day 2

I would like to start this blog by saying that after today the postings will probably spread out to every few days because we will be getting into teaching. Today we woke up early and headed for Kakum National Park which is located about 3.5 hours west along the coast of Ghana. When we got there we went on a canopy walk over the jungle. We saw some very cool plant life and some monkeys, butterflies etc. After the canopy walk we headed for Elmina and the oldest, largest slave castle in Sub-Saharan Africa. We toured the slave castle while a guide explained the history and details of the castle. In between the two trips we stopped at a "resort" called Coconut Grove where we had a really good lunch. So far I have not had anything too exotic to eat but all of the food has been very good and somewhat different from our normal in the United States. The largest portion of our day was spent in the car travelling. On our way home the traffic around Accra, the capital city, was terrible. It took approximately 5 hours to get home. We played some euchre and slept to pass the time. One really cool thing about the travelling is many of the cars have sayings on the back windshield like "God is good all the time" or "In God we trust" or "When the Lord say yes who can say no" and many others. Today we really got to see the poverty, scenery and culture that is Africa. I will try to explain this more later. Finally here is a brief outlook for the coming days for me and the group. Tomorrow should be low key with some sleep, watching soccer, going for a run. We will also be 5 hours ahead starting tomorrow so if it is 5pm in Michigan it is 10pm in Ghana. On Monday we will be touring the school and meeting with teachers and on Tuesday we will start in the classroom.
